On April 9, 2018, a fine gentleman took his spirit and left behind his earthly body and the many people who loved him. Jay was born December 23, 1940, in Moody, Texas. He was a graduate of Austin High School (1959), the University of Texas, School of Business (1969) and the Louisiana State University School of Banking (1975). Jay had a passion and natural ability for running and ran cross-country for both the Austin High Maroons and the Texas Longhorns, running in the Texas relays. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps.
Jay Hundley’s first banking job in a career spanning 35 years was with the Texas State Bank in Austin. Jay made one of his initial loans to a young songwriter named Willie Nelson. “He had already sold Crazy Arms and Hello Walls. I figured he could repay the loan, but my supervisor thought otherwise,” said Jay. Always with a sly grin and twinkling blue eyes, he never failed to entertain listeners with stories about the Savings and Loan crash of the 1980s, and real estate development in Dallas. Jay served as CEO of ten C.W. Murchison, Jr. companies. The list of Banks and companies who employed Jay Hundley is distinguished. He was Senior VP of First National Bank of Commerce in New Orleans, VP of Nash Phillips/ Copus in Austin, VP of Citicorp Real Estate in Dallas, and Senior VP of Riggs National Bank of Washington, DC. Riggs sent Jay to London where he worked for two years. He also served as Senior VP of First Florida Bank in Tampa. He spoke often of his job as Senior Lending Officer for People’s Bank of California where he loved running the beaches of Marina del Rey. He also worked for the Department of the Interior as a Special Trustee for the American Indians.
After moving from Dallas, Jay and Kay Hundley made their home together in Horseshoe Bay for the last 18 years. Jay is survived by his wife Kay; his daughter Joanna and her husband Morgan Butler of Plano and their son Jack; his daughter Lisa Foreman and husband Bryan of Tyler and their sons Nic and Jack; and his son Tony Barnard and Rick Barnhart of Dallas. Other survivors include his siblings, Hank Hundley of Houston, Pam Kostick of Destin, Florida and sister Polly Hayes of Pflugerville.
Jay Hundley has finished his final cross-country. Those of us who loved him will always remember his winning smile and his tenacity. Rest in Peace, our Marine.
A Celebration of Jay’s life is planned between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm, Wednesday April 18, 2018, at the Clubhouse in The Trails of Horseshoe Bay.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to the American Cancer Society, Kindred Hospice or the charity of your choice.
