Dr. Samuel Neil Workman, age 83, died Friday, April 13th, 2018 at Springbrook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Clayton, NC. Born in Lauren’s, SC, he graduated from Lauren’s High School, received his undergraduate degree from Presbyterian College, and his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina where he maintained a lifetime alumni membership and attended annual conferences. He did his psychiatric internship and residency at Duke University culminating in the honor of Chief Intern. “Dr. Sam” loved playing piano during any celebration, encouraging sing alongs. As a gifted psychiatrist, he dedicated his life to nurturing, supporting, and healing the mental health of others.
Sam is survived by his brother, Lawrence “Spanky” Workman and his sons, Keith Workman and Ricky Workman (Sandra); his sister, Gail Meeks (Sam), her son, Samuel Workman Meeks and her daughter, Samantha Dawn Meeks; as well as his son, Neil Workman (Marylynn); his daughters, Ruth Anne Bowen (Kyle) and Kathy Blecke (Scott); and his grandchildren, Jimmy Workman and Emma Blecke.
Sam is predeceased by his ex-wife, Anne Workman; his mother and father, Beulah and Lawrence Workman; and his sister-in-law, Betty Workman.
A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at St. James United Methodist Church (301 Watts Ave., Laurens, SC, 29360) on Friday, April 20th at 11:00am with Rev. Doug Benton officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Transitions LifeCare of Wake or Johnston County, North Carolina (hospice), or to Foundation of Hope, Raleigh, NC.
