Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018, at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. J.R. Gossett officiating. Interment will follow at Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian, NC. Family visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Hanes Lineberry North Elm Chapel from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Talmadge was born in Greensboro, NC to the late Junius and Annie Smith Yates. He is an U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean War. He earned an Occupational Medal. He worked briefly for Cone Mill, and later retired from Pepsico as a truck driver after 32 years of service.
Talmadge was a lifeguard at Camp Herman, coached little league baseball and girls softball. He had many nicknames, “Pud,” “Barney” and “Rowdy.” He enjoyed golf, fishing, baseball, basketball, football and all things “Carolina blue.”
He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Norvie Jean Campbell Yates; grandchild, Anthony Janney; and siblings: Hildred, JB, Allen Yates, Velnor Simmons, Myrtle Jones, Marie Bryant and Betty Simmons.
Talmadge is survived by his wife, Margaret Ratliff-Yates; children, Linda Ward (Lee) of Pleasant Garden, Nancy Stephenson (Tee) of Stokesdale, NC, and Ronda Wray (John) of Greensboro; step children, Kathy Purgason (Don) of Brown Summit, Sharon Williams (Gary) of Oak Ridge, Pat Ratliff of Brown Summit and Diane Ratliff of Greensboro; grandchildren, Michael Ward, Kristi Ward, Zane Wray, and Alex Wray; great grandchild Jesse Ward; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association 7029 Albert Pick Road, Ste. 200, Greensboro, NC 27409 in memory of Talmadge Smith Yates.
