It is with great sadness indeed that I inform you of the death of our congregant Judith Halioua, early yesterday morning, April 24. Judith and her husband Jean-Pierre, z"l, and their sons Dan and Ben, have been longtime members of our congregation.
Judi grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. She loved French, the language and literature. She held undergraduate and graduate degrees in French language and literature from Brooklyn College. She became a teacher of French and Spanish, and administrator in the Foreign Language Department of Fort Hamilton High School. Later she joined the Foreign Language Department at George W. Wingate High School, where she developed the department of Haitian-Creole. Later she was recruited as a staff developer for the New York City High School Foreign Language/ESL program. She also studied Italian at New York University and Haitian-Creole at the New School for Social Research. Eventually she returned to Fort Hamilton High School as Assistant Principal and Administrator of the Foreign Language/ESL program.
Judi surrounded herself with kids throughout her life, and they all loved her - especially her own sons, Daniel and Benjamin, and their wives, Rebecca and Natalie, and of course, her granddaughter, Dan and Rebecca's daughter, Hazel Rose. And we remember as well the close and loving relationship she shared with her wonderful husband Jean-Pierre, z"l. She also had a cousin of whom she was quite fond, Anna Schwarz, and Anna's daughter, Andrea Shatz Bloch.
Judi was loved and respected by all: her colleagues and students, all of our congregants, and of course, her wonderful family. She cared deeply about diversity and equal rights for all people.
A memorial service for Judi will be held at Union Temple on Thursday, May 3, at 5:30 PM. The family asks that you contribute Tzedakah to the Union Temple Memorial Fund, Sabrina's Adapative Beach at www.sabrinasadaptivebeach.com or to any charity of your choice.
