Mullie Louise Varner, age 97, died peacefully on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks in Salisbury, North Carolina. Mullie was born on September 5, 1920 in Mount Ulla, North Carolina, to Tom and Lorene Ballard Edmiston. She worked for the China Grove Cotton Mills for many years.
She was a loving wife and mother. She married James Samuel Baker in 1942 and the couple raised two children together, James Samuel Baker, Jr. and Charles Michael Baker. Following James’ death in 1974, she married Lewis C. Varner in 1980.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Hoyle, George, Thomas, and Lewis Edmiston; by her first husband James Samuel Baker; by her second husband Lewis C. Varner; and by her son James Samuel Baker, Jr. She is survived by her five grandchildren: Lauren Baker Taglialatela, Kimberly Baker Stewart, Meghan Baker, Jason Baker and Benjamin Baker. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, step-daughters and their respective families.
Mullie was a social, active lady who was deeply involved in Thyatira Presbyterian Church for the majority of her life. She enjoyed traveling to new places and visiting with loved ones and strangers alike. She was an accomplished seamstress and wonderful cook. Her family and friends will always remember her as a sweet, independent, kind-hearted and generous person.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, April 27 at Thyatira Presbyterian Church with a visitation at 10:00 am. Revs. Stacy Steck and Sandra Kern will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mullie’s life.
