She was born at home in Surry County, NC on June 30, 1923, the daughter of J.R. (Oscar) Wood and Nacie Coe Wood, and made Davidson County her home most of her life. Kathleen graduated from Wallburg High School in 1941. She met and married the love of her life, Herman (Tootie) Hedgecock with whom she celebrated 42 years of marriage prior to his passing in 1984. She was a loyal and active member of Lebanon United Methodist Church. Kathleen retired as the manager from Wallburg Elementary School Cafeteria, where she had worked for 38 years and considered all the school children “her kids”, and still continued to do so.
Kathleen enjoyed talking. She never met a stranger and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Kathleen loved everyone, but she especially loved spoiling her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Nacie Wood; her husband Herman L. (Tootie) Hedgecock, her sisters Dixie Beck and Grace Eastman.
Surviving Kathleen is her son Sonny Hedgecock (Suzanne); granddaughter Cindy Hedgecock Toone (Robin),April Hedgecock Pugh, Ericka Hedgecock Saurit (Hernan), Amy Hedgecock (Forrest Littleton), and great-grandsons Caleb Littleton, Asher Littleton and Samuel Pugh; sisters Doris Bowen, Kate Pendry (Mahlon) and Rita Baxley (Harold). She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Kathleen’s Life will be on Saturday, May 12th at 10am at Lebanon United Methodist Church with Pastors Timothy James and Ralph Eanes officiating. The family will receive friends from 9am-10am at the church prior to the service.
