Mr. William Anthony Merklen, Esq. of Stamford, Connecticut passed away surrounded by family on May 9, 2018 at the Regional Hospice and Palliative Care Center for Comfort Care & Healing in Danbury, Connecticut. He would have been 91 on May 20th.
Mr. Merklen was born to Alfred Valentin Merklen and Grace Bichsel Merklen in New York City in 1927 and lived in Richmond Hill Queens before moving to Stamford, Connecticut with his Mother, Father and two brothers Kenneth and Alfred. In his lifetime Mr. Merklen worked for Lloyd’s of London, the law firm of Alessandro and Alessandro, and as an administrative law judge in NYC. He also served in the Navy as an Ariel Gunner during WWII protecting the Panama Canal. He was a member of the Navy swim team, and participated in competition diving at Jones Beach in Wantagh, NY.
Mr. Merklen is listed on the Seniority Honor Roll of the New York Athletic Club, holding membership there since 1944. He was also a lifetime member of the NRA.
Always quick witted, and deeply devoted to his family, Bill will be missed by his niece Christine Merklen Wolfe of Quaker Street, NY, his nephew Arthur Merklen of Central Bridge, NY, his sister-in-law Velma Merklen of Coral Springs, Florida and his dear cousins Michele Metzger Merklen, Gilbert Merklen, Bertrand Kubler, of Fellering and Ranspach and Than, France respectively and Roland Kubler of Singapore. He was also lucky enough to have seven great nieces and nephews and eight great great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank his good friends, Joe and Francis for being by his side, when family couldn’t, and for bringing him so much love, laughter and happiness.
We will always carry your memory in our hearts Uncle Bill. We know you are happy now with your Mother, Father, and brothers, Al and Ken.
Mr. Merklen’s family will receive friends on Monday, May 14th from 4-8 p.m. at the Bouton and Reynolds Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 15th at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow at the Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery.
