Lieutenant Colonel Henry Wilson Tutterow, Jr. USMC (Ret.) died May 09, 2018, after declining health. He was born in Davie County, NC, August 3, 1932, the eldest son of Henry Wilson Tutterow and Ruth Jarvis Tutterow. The family moved to Rowan County, NC, and Henry Wilson graduated from Spencer High School in 1949.After a semester at NC State he enlisted in The United States Marine Corps.
A list of assignments and commendations highlight, without really explaining, his service for the United States Marine Corps. After basic training at Parris Island, SC, he was assigned to The Second Marine Division. This was the basic assignment, with interruptions for temporary duty. He was an infantry officer for 21 years, 6 months, and an adjutant for 5 years, 2 months. Commendations include: National Service Medal with 2 clusters; Vietnamese Service Medal with 2 clusters; Navy Commendation Medal with gold cluster; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palms; Navy Achievement Medal; Combat Action Ribbon; Presidential Unit Citation. During this time he earned a BA in English from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Henry Wilson married Charlotte Newhouse in 1956 in Atlanta, Georgia. The couple and their dogs, lived in Hubert, NC. After Henry retired in December 1981, they moved to Georgia, closer to Charlotte’s family.
In 2007, Charlotte died after having had multiple strokes. A graveside service marked her return to her creator God and marked the mourning of those who loved and honored her.
In 2008, Henry met Audrey Martin, who became his companion, friend, and advocate. She was Henry’s caregiver through his declining health years and encouraged Henry to have an optimistic perspective and embrace life each day. Henry’s surviving family members are very grateful to Audrey for her dedication to him.
The eldest of four children, Henry Wilson’s next brother, Junie died in 2005, and is survived by two adult sons: Dirk and Eric. A brother, Keith and his wife Pat, live in NC. They have three adult children: Kirk, Kevin, and Kendra. A sister, Harriet Jennings, also lives in NC. Harriet’s husband, John Edward died in 2015.
