Fernando J. Monteiro, age 67 of New Bedford passed away after a 5 year courageous battle with lung cancer on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Patricia (Slowik) Monteiro to whom he had been happily married for 36 years.
Born in Portugal, a son of the late Miguel DaSilva Monteiro and Maria (deJesus) Monteiro, he was a longtime New Bedford resident. He attended school in Portugal and was member of the Portuguese Military. Fernando was a communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and was employed as a machine operator for New England Ropes for 34 years. Fernando was a loving husband, father and father in-law and a devout family man. He enjoyed trips to New Hampshire with his family and was an avid soccer fan, who was known for his smile.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two sons, Kevin Monteiro and his wife Stephanie of New Bedford and Jonathan Monteiro of New Bedford; two brothers, Alfredo Santos of New Bedford and Antonio M. Monteiro of New Bedford; and a sister, Maria Orquidia Monteiro of Portugal; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Maria Rosa Monteiro.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 8:00AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at FAIRLAWN MORTUARY, 180 Washington Street, Fairhaven, MA 02719 followed by a funeral mass at 9:00AM in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 235 North Front Street, New Bedford. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00PM.
