WEST Columbia - A memorial service for James C. Steele “Buddy/ J.C.” 90 of West Columbia will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Dunn’s Chapel, 281 Chapel Rd., West Columbia, SC 29172. The family will receive friends following the service in the sanctuary. Burial will precede the service at 10:00 a.m. at Dust to Dust cemetery, 205 Nulty Crossing, Swansea, SC.
J.C. passed away after a brief illness. The family would like to thank the staff at Opus Post-Acute Rehabilitation and Agape Hospice House for their love and support during this time.
Mr. Steele was born November 4, 1927 in Lexington, SC to the late James Tillman and Martha Autry Steele. He attended White Knoll School and served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a contractor and then as a maintenance worker at USC for many years. He built and repaired “junk” as he called it. Many pieces of “junk” can be found up and down the east coast. His vegetable garden was the pride of Lexington. He would tell the children “I planted it, now you pick it”. He loved the outdoors and being able to fish and riding his golf cart around.
J.C. is survived by his children, Freida (Wade) Spivey, Stephen (Nancy) Steele, Sheila (Johnnie) Miller, Charline (Richard) Spangler, Tracy Steele and Jamison Steele; one sister, Betty Jean McDowell and one step-sister-in-law, Ellen Steele; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by Pauline Steele; his parents, three sisters and one step-brother.
