Lillian “Lilly” Scheck Bradley celebrated her 90th birthday on May 26 and passed away peacefully at her home on May 31, 2018. Her long life was a blessed journey, and an adventure all who knew her were blessed to share also. She caused all those around her to shine.
She is grieved enormously by her husband of nearly 65 years, Donald Bradley; her children, Duane Michael and Catherine Bradley, Donald Edward Bradley Jr., Linda Sue and Chuck Abbott, Melissa Ann and Terry Martin, Michael Howard Bradley, and “adopted” son, Antonio Figueroa Varas; her grandchildren, Shannon, Megan, James, Sarah, Erin, Charles, Jaki, David, Sean David, and Molly; her great-grandchildren, Austin, Katie, Tyler, Bradley, Kelli, and Lilly; and the entire community of love she grew around her over her 48 years in Houston, especially her lifelong friends, Irene Doris and Frederica Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Florentine Scheck, her sister, Florence, and her youngest child, David Robert.
Lilly was born in Union City, New Jersey and studied at Seton Hall, receiving her B.S. degree as a registered nurse, which she maintained most of her life. She studied art and painting, was active in community theater, and even briefly formed a Beatles cover-band, The Ladybugs. She worked as a travel agent and was a world traveler - her love of the exotic and wild was well-known. She visited the Taj Mahal in Agra, India, which Don promised her before she would say “yes” to his proposal. She loved the stories of Rudyard Kipling, the poems of Longfellow-especially The Song of Hiawatha, the films Gunga Din and Beau Geste, and musicals such as Camelot and The Sound of Music.
She was a member of the St. Cecelia Catholic Community, where her husband, Don, has served as deacon for 43 years; a member of the Women’s Club, the St. Francis of Assisi Family Guild, and the Charity Guild of Catholic Women.
There will be a Vigil Service Thursday evening, June 7, from 6:30-8:30pm and a Funeral Mass on Friday morning at 10:30am. Both services will be held at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc Drive, Houston, TX 77024. A reception will be held in the parish community center following the Mass. Interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank so many people for helping take care of “Miss Lilly” these past three years, with a special thank you to Ruby Pink and Natasha Davis of Caring Hearts 24/7.
