John died on June 1, 2018 at his residence after an extended illness. He was born in Corinth on December 9, 1942 to the late Oscar Edward Spencer Jr. and Sue Leatherwood Spencer. John attended Corinth High School and in 1960 he joined the U.S. Army. He was part of the 7th battalion, 16th artillery and was stationed in Germany for 31 months. He returned to Corinth in 1963 where on October 18th while at a Corinth High School football game he met the love of his life Carole Gifford. He and Carole married on June 18, 1966 and he was the proud father of four daughters. John served on several local boards such as Ducks Unlimited, Corinth Preservation Commission Chair, Corinth Area Arts Council, Corinth Symphony Orchestra, Corinth Museum, Corinth Siege and Battle and was currently serving on the board of the Corinth City Cemetery. His passion shared with his late wife Carole, was being a part of the Corinth Band Aids for almost 20 years. He also drove the band equipment truck which he so fondly named, “Pearlie Mae”.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Carole Gifford Spencer.
John is survived by his four daughters, Sylbia Jacobs (Barry Mills) of Corinth, Amy Vanderford of Oxford, Kasey Atkins (Eric) of Corinth, and Mary Katharine Sullivan (Brian) of Gulfport; grandchildren, Allie Rhea Jacobs, Clayton Jacobs, Sam Vanderford, William Vanderford, Anderson Atkins, John Morrow Atkins, Carole Gray Atkins and John Patrick Sullivan; brother, O.E. Spencer III of Corinth; sister, Brenda Childs (Miller) of Corinth; brother-in-law, Gene Gifford (Betty) and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other family and close friends.
Rev. Roger Shock will officiate the service.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to AMEN Food Pantry, Corinth High School Band Boosters or First United Methodist Church.
