Daughter of a Depression-era tomato farmer, Winnie had a long career practicing law in Florida, retiring in 1991 from her position as judge on the First District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee. Her lifelong love of words and language led her to study journalism and literature, graduating from Florida State University in 1948. She earned her JD from University of Florida in 1951. She worked as an Assistant Attorney General from 1969-1976, developing a passion for the intricacies of tax law, and she had expertise in areas involving labor and business, gained during her time at the Industrial Relations Commission. Also she could work crossword puzzles faster than anyone she knew.
Winnie was first of all a mother and grandmother. She was married to Aubrey Dean Wentworth in 1947, having four children and three grandchildren. She led a Girl Scout Troop on many north Florida camping adventures. She loved canoeing on the Sopchoppy River. She had visited Russia, China, India, Eastern Europe, Denmark, Italy, and Greece. She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, and the Susanna Wesley Circle.
Winnie had six brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sister Jean Warner, of Pompano Beach, FL; by her children Sara and Ben, of Tallahassee, FL, Chris, of Crete, Nebraska, and Dan, of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; and by her grandchildren Brendan, of Elizabeth, CO, Maira, of Centennial, WY, and Max, of Tallahassee, FL.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, June 10 at 2:30pm with visitation beginning at 2pm at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 700 Timberlane Road.
