Thomas Edward Powers, 78, of Cumberland, passed away on June 1, 2018. Thomas was born on November 27, 1939 in Medford, MA to Elizabeth E. (Sherman) Powers and Thomas J. Powers. Tom moved with his family to Camden, ME in 1952. He graduated from Camden HS in 1957 and the University of Maine, Orono, in 1961, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He attended OCS in Newport, RI, and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy in 1962. In 1965, while stationed in San Diego, CA, Tom met and married his future wife, Patricia Kollmann, a Navy Nurse. Tom had a distinguished Naval career that included two tours in Vietnam, for which he received the Navy Commendation Medal for meritorious service in support of combat operations in Southeast Asia. He had numerous commands, both ashore and at sea, including serving as Executive Officer of the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Dahlgren, VA, as well as a tour at the Pentagon. He retired from the Navy in 1981 with the rank of Commander.
Upon retirement, Tom moved his family to Portland, ME. He completed his Juris Doctor from the University Of Maine School Of Law in 1983 and began his second career as an attorney and as a founding member of Seaborn Associates. Along with his wife Patty, Tom owned and operated Fidelity Title Company, Inc. in Portland ME for many years.
Tom volunteered much of his time, serving on the boards of a number of organizations, including the Lions, the Town Planning Board, and the Navy League. He led an admirable life of service to both country and community, but his greatest joy was his family; his wife Patty, his children and grandchildren. He was extremely kind and generous, admired and respected by all who knew him.
Tom will be missed and lovingly remembered by Patty, his wife of 52 years, his daughter Heather and husband James Gale, his son Colin and wife Carrie Powers, and son Christopher and wife Angie Powers. He will also be fondly remembered by his seven grandchildren, Isabelle, William, Owen, Thomas, Samuel, Evan and Luke, by his sister, Barbara Powers Fang, brother Brian Powers and his wife Marie, mother in-law Anne Kollmann, brother-in-law Richard Kollmann and wife Connie, and his many nieces and nephews.
