Ellen Agnes Guarnieri, of Walnut Creek, CA, formerly Miller Place, NY, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at the age of 80. She is survived by her loving daughter, Elaine Guarnieri-Nunn and son-in-law, Adrian Nunn, and grandchildren, Katherine, Sam and Jack, her beloved sister Marie Cash & brother-in-law John Cash, and many nieces and nephews. She was married for 38 years to the late Thomas L. Guarnieri. She was the daughter of the late John and Helen Tree and sister to the late John Tree.
Born and raised in Lyndhurst, N.J., Ellen began her career as an instructor for Olivetti Machines and later joined Jack Lenor Larsen Fabrics as a bookkeeper. She worked in many different roles at Larsen, traveling to China, Thailand and Europe, and retired in 1990 as Senior VP and Chief Operating Officer. She valued the friendships that she made over the years in the Larsen “family.”
She then returned to school and received her B.A. in Humanities at SUNY Old Westbury. She was active in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at SUNY at Stonybrook, teaching classes in Greek Literature and serving as President of the OLLI Advisory Board.
Ellen was known for her keen wit, a love of language, a quick smile and hearty laugh. She loved hosting family and friends’ gatherings, from Thanksgiving Dinner to “Christmas at Grandma’s” to her annual St. Patrick’s Day party. She was a fantastic cook, an avid bridge player and loved the theatre and, later in life, the opera. Although originally from New Jersey, she considered herself a New Yorker and loved both Manhattan and Long Island. In recent years, she was fortunate to travel with close friends to Madrid, Prague, Spain, Turkey and Germany. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at SUNY Stonybrook.
Reposing at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 1001 Route 25A, Miller Place, NY. Visitation on Friday, June 8th from 3-5 and 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass 9:30 AM Saturday at St. Louis de Montfort R.C. Church, Sound Beach, NY. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Coram, NY.
