Charles “Chuck” Howard passed away June 7, 2018 at Veteran’s Medical Center. He was born to Bernel and Helen Howard in Denver, Colorado on May 20, 1921, and was the oldest of three children. He graduated from North High School in 1940, attended CU, and then was drafted and served in the US Navy aboard mine sweepers. Being a life-long Lutheran, it was only fitting that he met the love of his life, Elvera Abrahamson, at a Luther League Meeting. They were married September 11, 1948, in Phelps County, Nebraska. They moved to Grand Junction where twin sons and a daughter were born. He worked for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad for 35 years in the communications department in Denver, Steamboat Springs, and Grand Junction, retiring in 1982 to Grand Junction. Chucks's life-long interests were HAMM radio, all things railroad, and Colorado History. He and Elvera did extensive traveling and entertaining of family and friends. His church was a very important part of his life where he served in various capacities from the keeper of the keys to folding bulletins. Chuck is survived by his three children, John (Jackie), and Jim (Audrey) Howard of Grand Junction, and Maribeth (Gary) McKenna of Centennial, CO; eight grandchildren; and eight great -grandchildren, all of whom he adored. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn (Dave) Roll of Wheat Ridge; and numerous nieces and nephews. Chuck was never one to waste his words. He was a quiet teacher, fiercely independent, and always a repository of obscure facts. He will be greatly missed. A visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19 at American Lutheran Church with services to follow at 10:45 a.m. A committal service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Veterans Cemetery of Western Colorado. Request donations be made to the American Lutheran Church, 631 26 ½ Rd. Grand Junction, 81506.
