Educated in the city schools, Helen was a graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury. She attended Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. At the end of World War II, she transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her BA in 1948. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.
Helen was married January 20, 1951 to Wallace Brown Newman of Charlotte. Surviving are their three children: daughter, Betsy Brabson (Bill) of Georgetown, SC; sons, Wallace Newman, Jr. (Jo) and Compie Newman (Catherine) of Charlotte; and grandchildren, Wylie and Tyler Brabson, Harrison and John Newman. She is also survived by dear cousins and friends. Helen’s husband predeceased her on November 14, 2000, two months before they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
She was a member of the Charlotte Junior League, Myers Park United Methodist Church and active in the community. Always interested in real estate, Helen obtained her license and was associated with H. Y. Dunaway Co. for 12 years. After several years at Percival, she established Helen Newman Realtors and completed a successful, 25-year career. Helen enjoyed her family and friends and appreciated all of the happiness and joy they brought to her life. Her ability to connect with people and establish deep relationships was a special quality. Helen particularly enjoyed Sunday afternoon tennis and many wonderful summer family vacations at the “3 G’s” in Windy Hill Beach, SC.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 14 at Myers Park United Methodist Church. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 13, from 5:00–7:00 pm at the home of Catherine and Compie Newman – 3912 Silver Bell Drive.
The family will be forever grateful for the wonderful care provided by The Cypress and Stewart Health Center and the dedication and personal care provided by Karen Goins.
