Born in California, he was a son of the late Joseph and Annabelle (Patterson) Murphy.
He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and attended SMU, now U-Mass Dartmouth.
He was a United States Air Force Veteran having served for 20 years.
He was an avid reader, enjoyed cooking, traveling, boating and was a sports enthusiast.
He is survived by two brothers, Thomas Murphy and his wife Nancy of E. Freetown and Patrick Murphy of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Annabelle Murphy and half brother, Earl Finley.

His memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 12:30pm at the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth. Burial in the Massachusetts National Cemetery at 2pm.
