She and her husband, Bill, were somewhat legendary in Columbus, at least for those fortunate enough to snag an invite to their dinner table.
And we're not talking about a traditional southern meat and three, although they could do that too. This was a full spread of North African cuisine including klobz bread and couscous made from scratch on a Monday night. Or maybe you and your friends dined on paella, dolmades, or tamales served with fresh Pico de gallo, or one of the family's favorite Chinese night.
Sally was a great hostess. If you needed a meal, her kitchen was always open. She loved her children, Tom and Suzie, and relished in their musical talents. The Columbus College Jazz Band, 20 members +, once played in her living room. Afterwards, the Chadwick kitchen was open to many a starving musician for dinner, whether it was 10, 20, or 30. Suzie and Tom's friends were always welcomed and by the time they left, full and happy, they were part of the Chadwick family. Sally always invited you to come again.
Mustang Sally loved her cars, especially her yellow Javelin. And she loved her river house and boats. The "family" crew who enjoyed feasting, music, and fun at the Chadwick house were also welcomed to the "C" house on the river, where they could enjoy a ride around Lake Harding on the Tom Sue.
Sally Chadwick was born to Thomas Alexander and Elizabath Duerr Simmons in 1926. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1944 and the University of Alabama in 1948. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, and her children, Suzie and Tom. She passed away on Thursday, June 7, just shy of her 92nd birthday.
There will never be another Ms. Sally, Mustang Sally, or Ms. Chadwick. Ride Sally Ride. Enjoy your reunion with your husband Bill and your children Suzie and Tom. You will be forever missed by your "other" children, Bobby Walton and Jim Evans.
Many thanks and much love to all those who made the last years of your life comfortable and happy, Steve Scott, Jan Hyatt, David Morgan, and especially RoJay, Mitzi and Bobby.
And finally...Roll Tide!
A celebration of Sally Chadwick's life will be held Wednesday, June 13, at 5:00 p.m. at Striffler Hamby Mortuary with the Rev. Dick Reese, St. Luke UMC officiating.
