Sally Baker passed away at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital on July 3, 2018 after a short illness. She was born in Indian Village in Detroit on February 3, 1922, the daughter of Edith Riley and Raymond Baubie. She attended Liggett School. While there she began what was to be a life-long avocation of volunteer service at the Sigma Gamma Hospital, now the Detroit Orthopedic Clinic. She received her B.A. at the University of Michigan during World War II where she was a member of Collegiate Sorosis sorority. She then joined Chrysler’s Special Adult Training Department for college graduates that aimed to prepare future management personnel. She married Lt. Luther Sandwick, Jr., a bombadier in B29s who predeceased her. She later moved to Ann Arbor and continued her volunteer work at the University Hospital, activity which turned into a permanent position. At that time, she remarried Sheridan Baker, a professor of English at the University of Michigan. They greatly enjoyed traveling and spent a year in Japan and another in England. Here at home they were avid readers and tennis players.
Sally primarily devoted her volunteer work to the Ann Arbor Thrift Shop and Women’s National Farm and Garden. She was also a long-time member of the Junior League, Ann Arbor City Club, Racquet Club, and the Huron Valley Tennis Club. When she stopped playing tennis, she poured that energy into bridge and spent many hours playing duplicate matches at the City Club, often winning honors for her play and attaining Golden Age Master status. In her last years, she devoted her volunteer hours to her friends, frequently taking them on errands and to appointments or driving them, of course, to bridge. As one friend said, she was “a natural-born caregiver, knowing the needs and pleasures of those on the receiving end.”
Sally Baker was predeceased by her husband, Sheridan Baker, and her brother, William E. Baubie of Grosse Pointe. She is survived by her daughters, Libby (James) Walton of Pinkney, MI and Elizabeth (Robert Abbe) Baker of Newton, MA, and her son, William S. Baker of Royal Oak, MI; her grandsons, Brian Lagler of Ann Arbor and Thomas Abbe of Cape Cod, MA, and granddaughters Krista Walton of Ypsilanti and Jamie W. Krinock of Howell, MI; her great grandchildren Lailah Monge, Lucas Lagler, Madison Krinock and Ellie Krinock; and her niece, Virginia Whitney of Grosse Pointe. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the charity of your choice. A private burial has taken place at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. A memorial lunch will be served at the Ann Arbor City Club at noon on Wednesday, September 26, 2018.
