Portland - Diane Barchard Higgins passed away at the age of 76 on July 7, 2018 at her home in Portland, Maine. Diane was born on February 25, 1942, in Hartford, Connecticut to the late Virginia Lorraine Barchard and the late Rex Wilson Barchard. She graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1960 and attended Chandler School for Women in Boston. She started a small home business and was known as The Village Seamstress. Having been in business for over 35 years, she built personal friendships with many of the 300 plus customers she had. Diane was preceded in death by her sisters whom she missed dearly; Linda B. Pyles and Sally Barchard, as well as her nephew John W. Pyles. She is survived by her daughters, Susan V. Chrobot and her husband Walter, Christine E. Brown, and Betsy L. St. Pierre and her husband Rob. Her brother in law John Pyles, niece Julie Howland, her husband Matthew and two children, and nephew James Pyles. Grandchildren, Christian DeVivo, Amanda Benge, Megan Gourley, Zoe Nylund, Samuel Brown, Conrad St. Pierre and five great grandchildren. Diane loved sewing, gardening, cooking, knitting and crocheting. She loved her home and it showed. She would often sit on her deck in the sun surrounded by beautiful flower boxes and watch the birds. People would stop to admire and comment on her gardens, where she spent countless hours. She shared her knowledge of gardening with many who learned from her. Having lived in Mussel Cove, Maine near the ocean, for many years, she couldn't get enough of the smell of salt air. She had many fond memories of family trips on her father's boat with her parents, sisters, and their families on Casco Bay. She loved spending the day at the beach. She was especially fond of Higgins Beach where she would go with her sister and their children. The Village Café was a favorite spot for family dinners. Her family was the center of her life and she was very proud of her daughters and their children. She will be remembered for many talents, vibrant smile, wit, enthusiasm, and little bit of mischief. Friends and family will gather for a private celebration. You may offer your condolences at www.lindquistfuneralhome.com
