Retired from the U.S. Army at the rank of Major (O4) in 1972. Harold was a Korean war veteran, participated in the 1962 Nuclear Testing in the Pacific with the Joint Task Force Eight, a Viet Nam war veteran, a Boy Scout troop leader, taught ROTC at South High School, and taught Geography at Metropolitan Community College.
Harold was born in Hinesboro, Illinois on October 9, 1928 to Benjamin Monroe Hornbeck and Rosa Alice Wingler Hornbeck. He married Dorothy Eilene Slight on December 25, 1949 in Griggsville, Illinois, Two daughters were born to the couple, Charlotte Jean Hornbeck and Deborah Sue Hornbeck. Deborah was born in Brazil in 1965, while Harold was stationed in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, and daughter, Deborah. He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte; grandchildren John Alan Copes and Nicole Tess; great-grandchildren Nick, Brittany Anne, Pheadra Lynn, John Alan III, Madison Marie, Max and Jac; sisters Phyllis Mountain, Shirley Dearth and Mary Meyer; sister-in-laws Mary Allen, Patricia White, and Beulah McDonald; brother-in-law Maurice (Frosty) White; nieces Pam, Sandy Rufner, Linda, Marcia, Rosemary, Sandy, Sharon, Sheila, Susan, Shelby, Geri Sue, Andrea, and Amber; and nephews Richard, Roger, Freddie, Harold Jr., Tim, Cary, Brian, and Travis. Funeral Service held Friday, 7-13-18, 2:00PM at Kahler Dolce Mortuary. Visitation prior to service 12:00-2:00PM. Internment Papillion Cemetery.
