Auburn – Johanna Caroline Halberts Moody, 85, of Poland, Maine, passed away peacefully on July 10th, 2018, with her family by her side. Johanna was born in Portland, Maine on January 25th, 1933 to Frederick Halberts and Minette Elwell Halberts. Johanna graduated from Deering High School and then went on to the University of New Hampshire, where she received her undergraduate degree and met the love of her life, Arthur Earle Moody, who predeceased her in 1997. She majored in history at UNH, was an active member of Chi Omega and went on to receive her Masters Degree in Education from the University of Southern Maine. She pursued her passion for shaping children’s lives and became a public school teacher in New Jersey, Illinois, Georgia and finally, for nearly thirty years, at Yarmouth Junior-Senior High School in Yarmouth, Maine. It is evident that her love of guiding young lives outlasted her teaching career in that, long after she retired, she substitute taught in Poland, Maine.
Johanna’s prolific interests included camping, writing, cruising, traveling, reading, boating, skiing and spending time with her family and friends. She took great joy in spending her summers at Keoka Beach Campground, where she rarely lost a game of cribbage and was a beloved member of the community. She was also an active member of The Poland Community Church.
Johanna is survived by two children: Fred Moody and wife Darlene of Tennessee, Kim Moody and husband Steve Buttner of Poland, Maine. She also leaves behind three grandchildren: Jake Moody, Johanna Moody and Eric Garrison. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her two sisters: Patricia Halberts Revie and June Halberts Cramer.
A Celebration of Life service will take place at Poland Community Church, 1208 Main St., Poland, ME. 04274 on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 2pm.
