James B. Harle, affectionately known as “Doc” by his friends, family and patients, passed away Monday July 30, 2018 at his home in Brighton Gardens Assisted Living in Prairie Village, Kansas. He was surrounded by his daughter, Sally, and her husband, Brett Haugland, along with many of the caring staff of Brighton Gardens who considered him a friend.
Doc is survived by his three children - James and his wife Paula, from Des Moines, Iowa; John and his partner Jerry, from Bellville, Texas; and Sally and her husband Brett, from Leawood, Kansas; and his four grandchildren, Sara Harle Corujo, Morgan Harle, Sam Haugland, and Mackenzie Haugland, and his great grandson, Luciano Corujo.
Doc was born on December 1, 1924, along with his twin brother Wiley, at Mary Gates Memorial Hospital in Port Arthur, Texas. He graduated High School in 1943. He attended the University of Texas at Austin as a pre-med student and graduated with a medical degree from the University of Texas at Galveston in 1949. He served in the Korean War as a battalion surgeon where he was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. In 1953 he pursued a medical career in Bellville, Texas with his college roommate Winston Neely where he began his practice as a doctor and surgeon.
Doc enjoyed college football, and was an avid Longhorn fan. He also enjoyed golf, bird hunting, horses and being in the cattle business. He was an active member of the community until his retirement. He was loved by many for his generosity and community awareness.
Doc spent his final years in Prairie Village, Kansas where, because of health reasons, he could be near his daughter Sally and her family.
