Modesta “Fafita” Figueroa- Agosto was born in Loiza PR on November 4, 1936 to Jesus Figueroa & Aleja Sanjurjo. Modesta was raised in Puerto Rico and after graduating with honors , wanted to fulfill her dreams of going to Olympics and compete in Track and Field. Although that did not come to fruition she did meet the love of her life, Jose Agosto Sr. Modesta and Jose shared many adventures, a notable one is when their daughter Joycie was almost delivered on the airplane en route to Ohio. Once here, she became a Social worker for the Spanish American Committee assisting immigrants in establishing themselves to a new State. She continued paying her way through college and received her Bachelor’s degree and became the first Bi-lingual teacher not only for Cleveland Public Schools but the first in Ohio. She retired after 34 years with the school system. Modesta was a pillar in the community and a respected advocate. She was involved with Club Alma Yaucana where she received many recognitions from her peers. She had a love of poetry and dance which she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Modesta passed away peacefully on August 4, 2018 in her home surrounded by those who loved and cared for her.
Modesta is survived by her children: Irving, Joycie, Jose Jr. and Manuel, 10 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Blanca, Miriam, Ricky, Dinorah, Robert, Randy and Ray. Preceded in death by her brothers, Carlos, Tony, Edwin, and Rudy She will be missed by a host of nephews and nieces. VISITATION FRIDAY 4-8 PM AT CRACIUN BERRY FUNERAL HOME 7200 DETROIT AVE.
