Al was born on September 17th, 1958, to Jeanette June Cottingham (Goodman) and George Lambert Cottingham. Both of Al’s parents are deceased, as is his oldest sister, Greta Curet, but is survived by his sisters Nancy Hodge of Pensacola, Florida, and Mary Anne Bradley of Windermere, Florida as well as four nieces and four nephews.
Al enjoyed many successes in his life but was known as a keen minded, kind, caring and witty son, brother, uncle and friend. He is missed by his family and many close friends.
Al was a licensed general contractor and processed his knowledge and skills to be considered a competent and acknowledged builder in the Pensacola area.
Al had many interests, especially collecting knowledge regarding his father, George’s, military service as a decorated member of the 1st Marine Division while George bravely fought in the Pacific theater during WWII.
Al’s face would light up when he could proudly boast about his father’s heroic and decorated journey in the war, but also recognized, and cared for, the effects the war had on his father. Al was a kind man who loved his parents very much.
In the 1970s and 1980s, you could find Al competing, with his father watching, at many golf tournaments where Al was a competent competitor. Al was a three-year letterman and a two-time City Champion from Escambia High School, where he graduated in 1976. Al turned professional in 1979 and played professional golf at the entrance levels in Toronto, Canada and Detroit, Michigan as well as wins in the Divot Derby and the Fiesta of Flags Tournaments. He later attended the PGA tour school at Boca Raton, Florida. Like many professional athletes, injuries prevented Al from further pursuing his professional golfing career.
Subsequently, Al graduated from W.M Industries Business Owens School in 1982. Al’s business acumen was a great quality that helped propel his construction career. Al stayed in the construction business nearly up to the time of his death even though he fought many medical issues during his final years.
Al was a friend to many. He was sometimes considered too kind for his own good and left us loved by family and friends alike.
