Geniel Crandall of Plano, TX returned to her heavenly home in the early hours of Wednesday, August 8, 2018 surrounded by friends and family. She was 64 years old. She ultimately succumbed to the effects of pulmonary fibrosis, a condition that was not diagnosed until the last month of her life.
Born in Ogden, Utah in 1953, Geniel was as unique as her name. She shined as a light to everyone around her. Her love and compassion drew everyone to her. She emulated the attributes of her Savior, Jesus Christ the best she knew how. Indeed, it was His light that shined through her. She was kind to a fault and equally friendly to those whom she knew and those she had never met. Even in the days she spent in the hospital, her nurses would line up to serve her on their shifts. They knew she would never speak an unkind word, be berating, or complain about her situation. She would lighten their day with her humor and always thank them by name for all their efforts in her behalf. Even in her last days, she still made it a joy to be near her.
Geniel worked early in life as a mortgage underwriter, but her most important contributions came in her home and church duties. Geniel lived her life as a servant of God. A lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Geniel served people of all ages. Her favorite callings involved serving the youth of the church, which she did in the Young Women’s Organization and as an early-morning scripture study leader for high school aged youth. She also served as her local Relief Society president and area Primary (children’s group) president. And she raised four rambunctious boys to become good (and sometimes rambunctious) men.
Preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Theo Mathie, she is survived by her husband of 45 years, David, four sons (Brian, Brent, Mark, and Scott), their wives, nine grandchildren (Jeremy, Nicole, Amanda, Matthew, Maxwell, Jera, Tyler, Andrew, and David) one brother, Steven Mathie, and two sisters, Sandra Hadley and Diane Tucker.
A public viewing will be held at Ted Dickey Funeral Home (2128 18th St, Plano, TX) on Sunday August 12 from 7 – 9 p.m. Her funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building (2700 Roundrock Trail, Plano, TX) on Monday August 13 at 10:00 a.m. Her body will be interred at Plano Mutual Cemetery.
Her family would like to thank the countless friends who came to see her the last month she spent in the hospital. She never had to spend more than a moment alone, even overnight. We would also like to thank the nurses at Methodist Richardson hospital and the doctors and nurses at UT Soutwestern Medical Center for their efforts in caring for her.
Flowers can be sent to Ted Dickey Funeral Home prior to her services. If you would like to make a donation instead, we ask that you consider the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (pulmonaryfibrosis.org) or the missionary fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (https://www.ldsphilanthropies.org/missionary)
