Mrs. Poppell moved to Augusta, Georgia as a small child where she resided until her passing. She worked many years as a bookkeeper, followed by five years of service at Hollingsworth Products. She then devoted more than twenty-four years of service at Fort Gordon as a Civil Servant in Data Processing.
She accepted Christ as a child under the Godly influence of her parents and attended Bayvale Baptist Church during those early years of salvation. She then attended Crawford Avenue Baptist Church for more than forty years where she served in the church nursery for over twenty years and taught Bible stories using flannel board demonstrations. She assisted other women in the church, creating hundreds of beaded Christmas ornaments for the large Christmas tree in the sanctuary. She then moved her membership to Warren Baptist Church where she co-taught her adult Sunday school class, made salvation bracelets for the mission groups and sewed more than 3500 canvas backpacks for local and foreign mission trips. Additionally, she made canvas bags for the Gideon Bible distribution team, crocheted over 1000 hats for the homeless and infirmed children at Augusta University Children's Hospital and sewed and smocked dozens of cap and gowns for the stillborn infants at two local hospitals. Although she devoted much of her time to mission projects, she was a voracious reader and enjoyed watching the Wheel of Fortune for nightly entertainment and as well as the many sporting and school events of her grandchildren. She also financially supported scholarship funds and foreign missionaries affiliated with Columbia International University in Columbia, SC.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Fannie Belle Howard; and a sister, Myrtle Howard. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Elizabeth Redhage, Sarah (Tim) Mundy, William (Gwen) Poppell, Paula (Bill) Martin, Patty Poppell-Richey and Cynthia Poppell. She is also survived by her sisters, Louise Reynolds of Wisconsin and Iris Dinkins of California, as well as 11 grandchildren and numerous great- grandchildren.
The pallbearers will be her grandsons; Jeff Redhage, Chris Redhage, Bryan Mundy, Jonathan Richey and Paul Martin, as well as nephews; Jimmy Crawford, Bob Poppell, Cliff Poppell and Kuenn Poppell. The Faithful Ladies Sunday School Class of Warren Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers.
