She was raised on a farm in Wayland, Iowa, along with her brother Jim and her sister Gratice.
After high school she told her father she wanted to go to nursing school and he agreed, as long as it was close by. She attended Mercy College in Iowa City, Iowa, not far from home, and graduated with her degree as a Registered Nurse on September 4, 1947.
Meanwhile...a young man named Weldon had taken a trip to Wayland with his brother, Wilbur and they happened to meet a pair of sisters named Gratice and Evalyn at Sugar Creek Mennonite church. The "sisters" started dating “the brothers" and the rest is Happily Ever After!
Evalyn went on to finish more nurse’s training in Milwaukee and did very well. After continuing to date Weldon they married in May of 1952. Gratice and Wilber also married. Evalyn and Weldon moved to Princeton, Illinois and started a family by having their first two children; a son Craig and daughter a Christa. A few years later they moved to Denver, Colorado where Evalyn worked a Registered Nurse for the next 25 plus years. She worked very hard and at the same time raised a family. Though her oldest, Craig was born with cerebral palsy he was never a burden, he was her bright light and she loved him so much. Once settled in Denver, Colorado they had their third child, Gretchen.
Evalyn’s love for the Lord was no secret in her life. She was always willing to talk to anyone about Jesus, and had a warmth about her that drew people close. Evalyn was very involved with the church and raised her children going to church. She loved having church friends & neighbor’s over for meals. She had many friendships lasting many years.
Weldon and Evalyn moved back to Illinois later in life to be to be close to family again, and then moved again to live by their daughter Christa in Colorado Springs. In the summers and in the winters, the pair lived at Pioneer Park in Arizona. They eventually settled in at Glencroft Senior Living near their daughter Gretchen, where they developed an additional family and received great care.
Evalyn went to be with the Lord on August 20, 2018.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Weldon, her son Craig, and her daughters Christa (Mike) Green and Gretchen (John) Albrecht Endres, her 5 granddaughters Jaylyn, Jamie, Jessica, Brooke, and Mikayla, and last but not least, her 2 great granddaughters Valentina and Malia.
