Maxine was born in Angora on June 15th 1923 to Leo Daniel and Maybelle (Lawrence) Carnine. Country school on horseback with her brother Forest led to St. Agnes Academy in Alliance for high school. Maxine met Marvin A. Romig at the end of WWII and married in July 1945. After Marvin received his Juris Doctorate they moved to Ogallala where she styled hair before settling in Oshkosh to raise a family. There she became a founding member of five families which moved a one room country school to town and started the Episcopal Church where she was church organist for 50 years. It was in Oshkosh Maxine flourished as the consummate entertainer capable of hosting large groups with 5-star quality five-course meals in the perfect ambiance. Maxine’s infectious love of music and the arts combined with her natural gift of style and color to serve her associations well. From being chosen the Associate Director of the 1967 Nebraska Ash Hollow centennial program to repeatedly being a judge for Miss Nebraska Pageant’s. Maxine truly relished getting children involved in music and the arts. From organizing them to perform live on parade floats to varied programs at the city auditorium, including the 500 guest Wheat Belt banquet with a 1960’s style variety hour. Maxine renovated the old hospital in 1972 to bring Maxine’s Emporium, “a marvel of gifts and fine dining in The Courtyard”. And in 1981 she opened Maxine’s Department Store. As well as having started the vaunted Birthday Club, Maxine loved adding special touches for the Bridge Club and starting the Dance Club. While she was well known for her amazing yard and flower beds, Maxine took great pleasure in holiday decoration, lighting and music with all the associated festivities. But most of all she enjoyed the opportunity to sit, play games, converse and laugh with family and friends. Maxine Romig was the epitome of elegance and class and will be fondly remembered by all for such.
