Thurston (Vick) H. Vickery, Jr., the son of Thurston H. Vickery and Vernon Ayers Adams, was born May 18, 1941, in Hartwell, Georgia, where he was raised and educated. He joined the Army in August of 1961 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in August of 1967. He was very proud of serving our country. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and was also an expert marksman and sharpshooter. On May 18, 1988 he began working with Space Alliance at NASA and he retired on March 25, 2005.
On May 3, 1966, Vick was united in marriage with Erika Stock in Germany. He was a wonderful husband and amazing father, grandfather and great grandfather. Even better than that he was a great friend to all that knew him.
Vick was one of a kind. To know him was to love him. He would do anything for anyone. “Jack of all trades and master of none” was one of the most accurate statements he would make, even though we all knew he mastered pretty much everything he set out to do. In the past several years of his retirement he took up wood turning including his pens, which many of us have been blessed with and will hold them dear to our hearts because they were truly made out of love. If he wasn’t providing you with a great laugh, he was showering you with his knowledge. He has helped so many but never wanted to accept any help in return. If you looked up selflessness in the dictionary his name would proudly be there.
Vick was extremely proud of and loved his family very much and worked very hard to provide for them –even when his health tried to dictate otherwise. He will be remembered for many things including his “quick witted” sense of humor, joke telling and fondness of socializing. His emails will be greatly missed by all that received them. Also, his love for cooking and baking. If you could count on one thing it would be that you were going to try a new recipe the next time you saw him.
Vick passed away on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018, at the age of 77 years old aka “21”. “The most loveable person on the planet, just ask him.” He would say.
Vick will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Erika Vickery; children, Ilona (Lance) of Rockledge, Angie (Bobby) of Texas, Richard (Sherrie) of Port St John; six grandchildren, Justin of Texas, Ryan (Natalie) of North Carolina, Jayson (Jamilette) of Port St. John, Ashley (Brandon) of Port St. John, Lauren of Texas and Taylor of Port St. John; 4 great-grandchildren, Jayda, Jayla & Jayde (arriving soon) and Jaxon; brother Jerry (Ramona) of South Carolina, brother, Kenneth (Grace) of Florida; sisters, Vicki and Sandi of Georgia, brothers, Dusty and Timmy of Georgia; his mother Alice Ayers Adams of Rockledge and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flower arrangements and plants we ask as a family that you please donate to the American Heart Association.
Services will be held at the Life Event Center at Florida Memorial in Rockledge on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Visitation from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. We will be honoring Thurston H. Vickery with a Celebration of Life at 4:00 pm, because he truly embraced his life and lived it the way we all can only hope to match.
