On Wednesday, September 5, 2018, Richard Carter Lee resident of Glenn Dale, MD, born in Quincy, MA passed away. Beloved husband of Beverlee A.Lee (nee Trojan) , father of Andrew R. Lee (Kim), Matthew J. Lee (Mary Beth), Bryan M. Anderson (Victoria), Nathaniel A. Lee (Lori), Aimee K Harmelink (Chris). Devoted brother of Louise Lee, and Frances Lawrence (Jim). Cherished grandfather of Gabriel, Jennifer; Griffin, Samson; Zackary, Joshua, Leigha; Kathryn, Juliana, Alexander; and Jacob.
Richard was a faithful servant of God, an amazing husband, father, brother, and the proudest grandfather on the planet who would burst with joy when surrounded by his grandchildren, or simply when talking about them. A brilliant and hardworking student, he overcame polio as a child and went on to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Physics at Harvard University, and a Master’s degree at George Washington University. In his early career, he was heavily involved with the Apollo space program. He later joined the Department of Health and Human Services where he helped pioneer a program which provided healthcare to thousands of underrepresented neighborhoods.
Music was deeply important to him, he sang in many chorus and choirs from high school and college throughout his entire life including the Harvard Glee Club, University of Maryland Chorus, Hyattsville Methodist Church Choir, The Masters Chorale, and Ascension Catholic Church Choir where he also Cantored for many years.
He was a devoted and involved member of his community, and had many interests including music, literature, sailing, square dancing, and a spirited debate. Most importantly, he was the most caring and loving human being that we were blessed to have loved and who loved us back so deeply.
Celebration of life to be held September 21 at Robert E Evans Funeral home, 16000 Annapolis Rd, Bowie, MD 20715 from 4-8 PM. Respects may be paid September 22 from 10-11 AM at Ascension Roman Catholic Church, 12700 Lanham-Severn Rd. Bowie, MD 20715, followed by Catholic Mass at 11:15 AM.
Family will receive flowers or in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Interment to be held privately.
