Sharon was born on September 21, 1951 in McAllen, Texas. She passed on September 12, 2018 at her home near Granger, Texas.
Sharon grew up in Mission, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley, where her mother was a school teacher who taught her to value education and equality, and her father was an oilfield worker who taught her the value of hard work and how to cuss like a roughneck. She dropped out of high school, got a GED and attended the University of Houston, The University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Texas-Pan American in her twenties before taking a 20+ year break in her education to raise her children. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Texas State University in 2005.
Sharon birthed three children, was “second” mom to many, and loved them all fiercely. She was proud of her children’s successes and reminded them often. She loved nature, wildlife, and all animals more than most people. She enjoyed simple pleasures in life: solitude, peace, and watching the animals from her windows at the farm. She relished the beauty and energy of severe Texas thunderstorms, so much so, that she preferred no window coverings. She wanted to witness all of nature’s blessings.
Sharon’s work life crossed many industries and experiences. She was co-owner of a home remodeling business, worked in customer service, and greatly enjoyed working as a teacher and substitute teacher. One of the professional accomplishments that she was most proud of came during the years that she worked for the Texas Department of Health. While there she worked in the Immunization Division on a statewide campaign to increase the rate of childhood immunizations in Texas.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Gretchen Duncan, and her brother John Hayden Duncan. She is survived by her son John “Jay” Williams; daughter Summer Barber and Summer’s husband Mark Lewis, their daughter River, and son Lincoln (due in December) and her daughter Sunshine Barber and her husband Carl Gillingham.
A celebration of Sharon’s life is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 28, 2018 at the Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home at 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78628.
