Charles James Nagle Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Charles J. (Chuck) Nagle, Jr., 88 will be at 10 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Copperas Cove on Friday, October 5, 2018 with Father Jim Robertson and Father Chris Downey officiating. A reception will be held in the Social Hall immediately after the Mass. Burial with full Military Honors will follow at Central Texas Veterans Cemetery. Mr. Nagle died September 26, 2018.

Mr. Nagle was born June 21, 1930 in Hartford, Connecticut to Charles Nagle and Elizabeth (Cooney) Nagle. He graduated from high school in 1948. After thirty three years of taking different college courses at various locations, gaining and losing credits along the way, he was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1981 from American Technological University, Killeen, Texas.

He and his family have lived in the Kempner/Copperas Cove area since 1979.

Mr. Nagle entered military service in October, 1948 and retired from the U.S. Air Force in May 1977 at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas having attained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. He was a Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and also served with the Post World War II, Occupation Forces of Japan. During his Military career, Nagle served in various assignments at Squadron, Group, Wing and Major Command level. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Nagle was assigned to HQ Air Training Command, responsible for monitoring and coordinating maintenance training programs at Flying Training Wings and at Technical Training Centers throughout the Command. During his career, he attended various leadership, management, and technical courses and was awarded several decorations and numerous service awards.

He later was employed by the U.S. Army at Fort Hood in the Office of Adjutant General, responsible for overseeing the Adjutant General's Garrison activities and functions. Upon his retirement in 1992, he was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Award.

Mr. Nagle was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church, participating in a number of Ministries. In particular, he was involved in the Ministry of Altar Servers for a number of years, developing and implementing a comprehensive altar server program, and later served as a Sacristan. Mr. Nagle and his wife, Shirley, were awarded the Diocesan Lumen Gentium Award in 2007 for their volunteer work in the parish.

Mr. Nagle served as Director for the Kempner Water Service Corporation for a number of years. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #6658, as well as various veterans and retired organizations.

Family was as important to Mr. Nagle as God and his country, and his beloved family reached beyond his wife, children, siblings and in-laws. He spent many months planning the Nagles' annual Christmas gathering (lovingly known as "Naglefest"), including a close personal friendship with Santa Claus. This very special occasion was enjoyed by family and many friends.

He was a husband and father, but also a mentor and friend to many others in his church, his career, and his community. His leadership and his presence will be missed by all.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Shirley; two daughters, Debbie Sharp and Patti Taylor; two sons, James, Jeffrey and wife, Sherri; two stepsons Country and Eric Salquist; and daughter-in-law, Polly. He is also survived by a sister, Kathy Arkilander. He also leaves to mourn his passing numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members and a multitude of friends.

Mr. Nagle was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Elizabeth Nagle; daughter, Belinda and son-in-law James McVaugh; son George (Mike); brother, Robert; sister Peggy and Roger Marchant, sister Betty Ann and Jerry Ehlman; granddaughters, Kassidi Salquist and Ally Taylor.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 PM on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at Crawford Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove, Texas with Rosary at 7 PM.
