Don Garrett, a long-time resident of Elk Rapids and World War II veteran, passed away on Sunday after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and is now residing in Heaven with his savior, Jesus and probably playing a game of gin rummy with his mom or one of his three brothers: George, Bob or Bud.
Don had a great sense of humor, positive attitude about life, a determined spirit, and caring heart. He was always busy helping others, enjoying a sport (flying, sailing, tennis, biking, or skiing), building something (boats, planes, houses, models, and even a house), playing music and singing.
He was always the happiest when he was with family and friends and was always cooking up schemes to get others to join in the fun. Don informally adopted many into our family, touched many lives and he will be dearly missed. Don definitely gave us all an example of how to live life to the fullest.
Please join us for a celebration of his life on Saturday, October 20 at First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids, 404 Spruce St at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow. Donations can be made to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301 Cincinnati OH 45250-0301. With Love, Mike Garrett, Maureen Street, Mary Ziola, and his ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
