Yarmouthport- Dr. David R. Williams died on October, 20 2018 surrounded by loving family and friends. He died from complications of Myotonic Distrophy.
David was born on April 27, 1948 in Jersey City, NJ to Madelyn and Lewis Williams. He graduated from Saint Peter’s Preparatory School in 1966, and then from Saint Peter’s College in 1970. His Jesuit education was tremendously important to him. David received his MD from the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1974, completed his residency at Boston University Medical Center, and trained at the Lahey clinic where he did his fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery. He was the first Board Certified Colon and Rectal surgeon at Cape Cod Hospital and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. David was a surgeon at Park Street Surgical, and later Southeastern Surgical Associates. He practiced Colon and Rectal Surgery at Cape Cod Hospital for 33 years, where he mentored many medical students, one of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of his career. After he retired from surgery, he practiced at Hyannis Family Medicine. David practiced medicine with compassion and grace, and his ability to help people exceeded his degree in medicine, he treated the whole person.
David immensely enjoyed his vocation as a surgeon, but his greatest joy was time with family and friends. Family was the most important part of his life, and if you didn't have any, he would adopt you as his. He traveled the world with his wife and daughters. While he was a very talented surgeon, he was an even better cook. He loved enjoying life, golf, shooting pool, and listening to music, particularly Bruce Springsteen, and Diana Krall. David loved football, especially the New York Giants. He loved his wife passionately, and loved his daughters beyond measure. He was committed to the education of his daughters. David was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened. He enjoyed intellectual conversation, and if you were lucky enough to sit by him for a while, you would get to engage in it. He could walk with kings and commoners. Of all the things he loved, he was loved much much more by all who knew him. His family, friends, and colleagues describe him as the kindest man they've ever come across.
David is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Gayle nee Wilcox, his daughter Tristan Williams of West Yarmouth, his daughter Jerrell (Mark) Lang of Chatham; his brother Dr. Lewis(Maria) Williams of Garden CIty, NJ; his sister Barbara Kravitz, RN of Toms River, NJ; and his two beloved granddaughters Norah(Angel Baby) and Molly(Bubba), who lovingly referred to him as “Daffy.” David is also survived by many, many loving friends and family.
His family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all of the medical staff at Cape Cod Hospital that took care of David with such grace, compassion and love.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 26th, from 4-7pm at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home 160 West Main St., Hyannis. Church services will be held on Saturday, October 27 at 11 am at Dennis Union Church located at 713 Route 6A in Dennis.
