Oliver E. Moreau, Sr. age 95 of New Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, in Our Lady’s Haven, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Natalie (Lopez) Alfonso Moreau to whom he had been happily married for 51 years.
Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Francois W. and Rose P. (Marshall) Moreau, he was a lifelong New Bedford resident. Oliver attended school in New Bedford and later joined the US Navy, serving during WWII, in the Pacific Theatre aboard the USS DuPage APA 41. He was honorably discharged with the following five awards; American Theatre Award, Atlantic-Pacific Area- 4 stars, Philippine Liberation, 2 stars, Good Conduct Ribbon and the WWII Victory Medal. He was later employed by the US Postal Service for over 35 years. He spent 18 years working on the Railway Mail Service, later transferring to the Downtown New Bedford and Providence Post Office.
He enjoyed his family dearly, enjoyed being on the water fishing, woodworking, he was an avid traveler and enjoyed telling jokes. He was the recent commander of the New Bedford DAV, Chapter 7. He was also indoctrinated into the National Order of Trench Rats, Dugout Chapter 622 of Taunton, for his exemplary service to Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of the Mayor's Veteran's Council.
In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by four sons, Richard Alfonso and his wife Valerie of Raynham, Oliver E. Moreau, Jr and his wife Sandy of PA, Michael Moreau and his wife Jane of Mattapoisett and Jeffery Moreau of MA; a daughter, Cynthia Edmonds and her husband Gary of NC; a sister, Hazel Baptiste of Dartmouth; six grandchildren, James, Michael, Brett, Edward, Moses and Dawn; 11 great-grandchildren, 4 great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late William, Charles and Frank Morrow.
His Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 9:30AM in St. Mary’s Church, 343 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford, MA 02745 followed a burial in Pine Grove Cemetery.
