Katharyn Schofield Martens, November 1, 2018 in Atlanta, GA.
Mrs. Martens was born January 16, 1920 in the Village of Canaseraga, NY to the Right Reverend Squire and Mable Schofield. She graduated from William Smith College in Geneva, NY, where she received her degree in three years with Honors in Psychology. Mrs. Martens served as a Trustee for over 10 years and received numerous awards and recognitions for her tireless service to the college, including the Elizabeth Herendeen Odell Award, the Alumnae Association’s highest honor for service to William Smith.
She was married by her father to Herbert Ralston Martens on June 15, 1946, in Danville, Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Martens raised their four children in Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New Jersey, before retiring to Midlothian, Va.
While living in New England, Mrs. Martens learned to fly an airplane, played golf, served as a Girl Scout Leader, volunteered at Peter’s Episcopal Church and was a devoted volunteer for the Washington National Cathedral. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and Community Chest and was the Education Chair and Vice President of the American Association of University Women as well as a member of the Board of Trustees at the Wilson School in Mountain Lakes, NJ.
While in Virginia, Mrs. Martens volunteered in the oncology department at Johnston Willis Hospital, and was a member of the Vestry at Manakin Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Martens moved to Lenbrook in Atlanta, in 2006. At Lenbrook, Mrs. Martens chaired the popular “Getting to Know you Committee”, and the Baby Caps for Grady Hospital Committee.
She is survived by her four children: Pamela and her husband, Martin Gilmartin, Barbara and her husband Peter Dunning, Robin and her husband Ron Stacey, and Herbert Martens. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Shannan Cuddy, Katharyn Gilmartin, Katharyn Cantor, Matthew Gilmartin, Courtney Balantine, Jennifer Menkowski, Jonathan Brown, and Tyler Huss. She also had 15 great grandchildren: Baker, Camryn, Jack, Nicholas, Drew, Jane Morgan, Charlie, Thomas, Ava, Marty, Burton, William, James, Alexander and Connor.
Mrs. Martens was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert.
Memorial services will be held at Manakin Episcopal Church in Midlothian, Va. in the Spring. Mrs. Martens will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Manakin Memorial Garden.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Martens name to William Smith College, 300 Pultney Street Geneva, NY 14456.
