Charlotte - Nelson Whipple passed away on November 3, 2018. He was born in Rochester, New York on December 2, 1931 to Arthur Paul and Mildred Miller Whipple. He leaves behind his gentle and loving companion in life, Jean Barnes Whipple of Charlotte. They spent 25 years together as members of the Little Church on the Lane and enjoyed many blessings.
Nelson will be missed by his five children, Karen, Sally, Nelson James, Dorcas, and Kim; four grandchildren, Laura, Mike, Samantha, and Marc; and a great-grandson, Flynn. His brother, Arthur P. Whipple, Junior lives in Oklahoma. Jean’s five children, grandchildren, and brother-in-law were a special part of Nelson’s life.
Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Nelson was an Eagle Scout and 1st Trumpet in the Male High School Band. At graduation he turned down the offer of a full scholarship to the Julliard School of Music. He served in the U.S. Navy Sea Bees for four years during the Korean Era and gave four more years of service in the Naval Reserves. After honorable discharge from active duty, Nelson graduated from the University of Rochester with Phi Beta Kappa Honors.
Nelson’s career as a Financial Analyst took him from Wall Street to Charlotte. He retired from First Union Bank, which allowed more time for tennis at the Providence Tennis Club. There are few people who could match his enthusiasm and love for the University of Kentucky Wildcats.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 9, at the Little Church on the Lane in Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Little Church are greatly appreciated.
