Travis Leon Dewberry was born July 16, 1952 in Sylacauga, Alabama where he grew up running barefoot in the dirt, exploring outhouses with his cousin, and standing in as a dress-up doll for his older sisters. He attended high school in Leeds, Alabama where he played center on the football team and threw rocks at the girl around the block to get her attention. After high school graduation, he studied electronics and joined the Air Force which took him to such exotic places as California and North Dakota. The rock throwing worked and he married Renee Melton on July 15, 1972. They have two daughters – Wendy Dewberry and Vanessa McCay.
Travis holds the Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Philosophy and Psychology from Samford University and the Masters in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He had a passion for educating children and served churches in Florida, Virginia, Oklahoma, and Alabama to that purpose. Travis loved his family, hiking, Legos, Alabama football, and cheesy movies – not ironically.
Travis is preceded in death by his father, Lee Austin Dewberry, and his mother, Murrell Castleberry Dewberry. He is survived by his wife, Renee Melton Dewberry; his daughters, Wendy Dewberry (David Hale) and Vanessa McCay (Michael McCay); sisters, Jackie Boartfied and Reba Stewart (Joe Stewart); granddaughter, Eugenie Hale; grandsons, Jack and Teddy Brock, and Ian McCay who continue to carry his spirit of commitment, love and joy into the world.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Children’s Media at Saint Vincent College.
A memorial service will be held Friday, November 09, 2018 at 12:30PM at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL.
