Was born July 7, 1925 to Nara West and Jimmy Washington in Centerville, Texas. He spent his school age years in Wichita Falls, Texas and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. After high school he was drafted into the United States Army. He served our country in World War II and the Korean War. He was awarded many accolades including, World War II Victory Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Korean Service Medal just to name a few.
After his time in the military, he returned to his roots in Centerville, where he met and married Roxiann Buckner in 1954. From this union they had nine children Patricia, Mary, Tony, Shirley, Lewis (Junior), Forrest, Lorenda, Kenneth and Floyd. L.S. worked several jobs in Centerville, until he started working construction. His work help build Interstate 45 North as we know today.
L.S. moved to Killeen, Texas in the eighties to continue his education. He was certified in HVAC and started a career in apartment maintenance. After he retired, he continued to live near Ft. Hood. He enjoyed visiting base and sharing stories with active military and veterans. His favorite hobbies were fishing, hunting and watching his beloved team The Dallas Cowboys. He loved to dance and often challenged his grandkids to dance contests. He played BINGO weekly and was excited to still have his driver’s license. He was an active man until his last days, always learning something new and challenging himself well into his older age. He was currently taking computer classes for interacting on social media. He has several certifications in Technical and Mechanical Engineering from Central Texas College.
L.S. is survived by one sister Margaret Robinson, 8 children, Mary (Chester), Shirley, Tony, Lewis (Junior), Forrest (Renell), Lorenda, Kenneth and Floyd (Tracy). Thirteen grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Patricia, and his siblings, Robert (Jerry), Wilson (Lo), Altha (Legs), Jimmie Lee (Big Bay), Fannie (Boy), Annie, Bertha, John (Gobie) and Irene (Polly Ann).
A funeral service is scheduled for Nov 30, 2018 at 12 pm at Crawford-Bowers, Killeen. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 1:15 pm to take L. S. to his final resting place, Central Texas State Veteran's Cemetery, Killeen. A graveside service will begin at 2 pm.
