Sarah Pope Herring of Dunn departed this life on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Cornerstone Nursing Home, being 89 years of age. She was born in Dunn, North Carolina on October 23, 1929 to the late Harvey Delmar Pope and the late Hester Dare Gallion Pope. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her former husband, Woodrow Herring; three brothers: Harvey “Red” Pope, Bobby Pope and Lewis Thomas “Plump” Pope; one sister: Hazel Pope Core. Sarah owned the very first thrift store in Dunn. She loved to spend her time refinishing furniture and she made it a family affair. After working in the shop, on Saturday’s you might have been able to spot her and some of the children at Porter’s Restaurant, enjoying a nice filet. She loved antiques and discovering a gem at a yard sale or auction. Her daughter Jill remembers the time she had to ride in the back of a pickup truck under the tarp with a truckload of furniture all the way home from an auction sale at Wade. Sarah was also quite crafty, she had a talent to paint and decorate shirts. She was a giving person, during the holiday season she would make her phenomenal Divinity candy and go around to her many neighbors and friends in town distributing the delightful confection. She was also a CNA in her later years, and even during her time at the nursing home she would give snacks to other residents.
Sarah leaves behind to honor her legacy, her three daughters: Patti Queipo and husband Roy of Dunn, Jan Herring of Erwin, and Jill Brown and husband Tony of Sanford; one son: Woody Herring and wife Lynn of Dunn; nine grandchildren: Sunni Kearns and husband Tyler, Colton Brown, Savannah Brown, Cooper Brown, Sydney Herring, Spencer Herring, Skylar Herring, Gus Callejas and Jessica Callejas; one brother: Sherrill Pope.
A graveside service to commemorate the life of Sarah Pope Herring will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 2, 2018 in Greenwood Cemetery with Rev. Sherrill Pope officiating.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be made to Divine Street United Methodist Church, 400 W. Divine Street, Dunn, NC 28334 or Walnut Street Animal Hospital, 800 Elm Street Extention, Dunn, NC 28334.
