Burt graduated from Manistee High School in 1948. After graduation, he sailed on the Great Lakes with the Merchant Marines before attending Michigan State University. While at MSU, he was drafted in the Navy and selected to attend Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Florida. Upon receiving his commission, he served in the Korean War as a Marine Corps fighter pilot. In September 1956, he married Marilyn Millikin, the love of his life and was wedded for 54 years, until her death in 2010. Often he would say, “The greatest accomplishments of my life were marrying Fritz and flying in the Marines.” He served on active duty for 10 years, and continued to fly with the Marine Corps Reserves until he retired as a major. Returning to Michigan State, he finished both Bachelor of Science and Masters of Arts degrees in 1963. In 1966, he moved to Traverse City where he taught and coached football for many years at Traverse City High School.
Burt was preceded in death by his son Brian, both parents, grandson Eric, wife Marilyn, and brother Robert.
He is survived by his children: David Comstock, Laura Sladek, and Karen (Steve) Creighton; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his faithfulness to family and friends, remarkable talents, sense of humor; and love of: reading, football, fishing, golf, David’s burgers, and deer camp. At Burt’s request, there will be no funeral service. However, this spring, his family will host a tribute to his life, service to country, and love of God – at the Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska, Michigan – that will include a Marine Corps honor guard. Memorial donations may be made to the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.
