Mildred Sawyer Duer, age 94 of Nashville, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, December 22, 2018. She was born to the late Obie Fletcher Sawyer and Louise Rhodes Sawyer on November 4, 1924. Mildred attended Palmer School and Hillsboro High. She was a life-long member of Blakemore Methodist Church. She worked for Nashville City Bank & Trust until she married Philip Shelton Duer. They were married for 59 years and resided in Nashville. She did volunteer work at her church for a number of years. Mildred was an avid bridge player and enjoyed a multitude of social events with her friends, especially if bridge was involved. More than anything, her children and their families were the center of her life and her love; devotion and pride was always apparent. She was a "home-maker" in the true sense of the word.
Mildred is survived by her sister, Dorothy Oxley, Dunwoody, Ga; her brothers Frank Sawyer, California; and Robert Sawyer, Nashville. She was preceded in death by her husband Phil, her parents, her two brothers, Kenneth and Raymond of Pennsylvania; her beloved sister, Evelyn Lester and her grandson, Grant Duer. Mildred is survived by her children Philip Duer (Pamela), Nashville; Patricia Harmon (Mike), Marietta, GA; Leslie Peebles (Paul), Nashville and Harry Duer (Amanda), LaGrange, KY; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The pallbearers will be Philip Duer, Harry Duer, Mike Harmon, Paul Peebles, Hunter Peebles, and Gray Peebles.
The family wishes to thank all those who cared for Mildred during the last 11 months. Daisy Jones, Mildred Abernathy, Sharon Johnson, and Inez Polk were an amazing team! Daisy was a wonderful coordinator of care and it was because of their combined efforts that Mildred remained comfortable and peaceful throughout the remainder of her life. We would also like to thank Avalon Hospice for all the assistance they provided to our beloved mother. Donations can be made to Blakemore Methodist or Avalon.
Visitation will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery between 11:00 AM-1 PM on Thursday, December 27th, with service and burial to follow.
