Funeral Mass for Ruth A. (Mrs. Charles) Matheny, of Reynolds Ave., Ormond Beach who died December 26, 2018 will be at Prince of Peace Catholic Church 9:00 am Saturday December 29, 2018. Mrs. Matheny has been a resident since 1980. She was born in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1918, she spent her childhood and school years in Mankato, Minnesota. She received her B.E. degree from Mankato State College and her M.A. from University of Minnesota. She took additional graduate study at Georgetown University and the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Mexico.
She was a teacher in Michigan, Minnesota, Chile, Columbia, and Venezuela. Returning to the United States with her husband, Charles, she began a journalism career editing textbooks. She later moved to the periodical field, editing publications both for children and for teachers. She was editor-in-chief of Today’s Catholic Teacher, a national magazine for Catholic Schools, for 25 years and continued as editor-in- chief emerita until recent years. She wrote articles for a number of national magazines and newspapers.
A member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, she was active in church ministry. A former member of the National Association of American Pen Woman, she has been honored in several editions of Who’s Who. She was a member of the Ormond Beach Woman’s Club, the Bridgetenders, and Wagon Wheel Club, where she indulged her love for bridge. Her travels took her to four continents.
Survivors include nephews John Gerth of Milwaukee, WI, and James Gerth Of Tallahassee, Florida, nieces Ann E. Garofalo of Madison, WI. Mary Helland, Rapid City, SD, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Matheny, and her only sister, Mary Elizabeth Gerth.
