Alvin “Al” Leonard Cox, of Wheatland, Wyo., went home to his Lord Jesus on Jan. 1, 2019, in Loveland. He will be remembered for his gentle nature, kind smile, beautiful woodworking creations, and the joy he found in taking care of others.
He was born on Dec. 27, 1941, in Illinois Grove, Hardin County, Iowa, to John Marvin and Minnie Myrtle (Moore) Cox. Al graduated from Eldora High School in Iowa and earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Iowa State University. As a veterinary technician in the U.S. Army, Al served a tour in Vietnam where he cared for service dogs and other animals. Al cared for the horses used to pull the caisson that carried President Kennedy during his funeral procession. After his service, Al managed hog feeding operations in Iowa and Nebraska.
Al married Karen Swedberg on Feb. 16, 1974, in Iowa Falls, Iowa. The couple moved to Twentynine Palms, Calif. where they worked with children in residential home care and raised his son, Alan. The couple then moved closer to Karen’s family in Greeley, where Al worked as an electrician. The family then settled in Wheatland, Wyo., where Al retired and spent his time as a master woodworker, hunter and fisherman. Al was a beloved and active member of the Wheatland Bible Church and enjoyed spending time at the senior citizen center in his community.
Al was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; older brother, John; and his parents.
Al is survived by his loving companion, Wendy Crowe; son, Alan; and grandchildren, Leonard and Evie; six siblings, Ralph, Merle, JoAnn (Heintz), Homer, Mable (Buerckley) and Dale.
