SHAFLEY, Rose Marie (Fontaine) passed away peacefully New Year’s Day, January 1, 2019 at the age of 97. She was born in Poplar, Montana to Peter and Jeanette (Buckles) Fontaine. Rose had two brothers, David and Buddy. When she was very young, she was sent away to a school in Idaho along with other Sioux Indian girls.
After Rose completed the eleventh grade she moved to Bremerton, Washington to work in the ship yard which was an arrangement that would allow her to her receive a High school diploma. While working in the ship yard during WW2, she met Earl Lawrence Shafley, who was an officer in the Navy for 23 years. Rose married Earl on June 22, 1944. They remained married for 64 years until he passed away on January 22, 2009. Rose followed him to Germany during the war traveling to Holland, Switzerland, Denmark, France and Spain. Traveling was something they both enjoyed. After Earl retired from the Navy, they returned to Saginaw MI. They moved to Florida after Earl’s retirement from teaching in 1982.
Rose was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna J. Coleman who lived in Tallahassee, Florida.
Rose was an active member of the American Legion in Saginaw, Michigan and the American Legion Post #273, Madeira Beach, Florida serving on the Auxiliary where needed. She was also a longtime member of the Moose Club where she enjoyed visiting with her friends and dancing. She was a talented bowler scoring several 300 games. She was a member of the Perkins shuffle board team in Saginaw Michigan earning many championships.
Rose was a member of the Fort Peck Assiniboine & Sioux Tribes, she was very proud of her Indian heritage. She often would travel to Montana to visit her relatives.
Rose is survived by her grandchildren, John Coleman, Joseph Coleman Jr. Wesley and wife Rachelle Coleman and Pamela and husband Michael Allen; 8 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and neighbors.
