Phil grew up in Jackson, Tenn. He graduated from Jackson Central Merry High School in 1990 where he played bass clarinet in the JCM band. He attended the University of Memphis and was a fan of the Memphis Tigers.
A loyal employee, Phil worked for FedEx for more than 20 years. He loved working for FedEx. He also worked as a carriage driver in downtown Memphis for more than 20 years, a job that he adored. Phil deeply cared for the carriage horses, companion dogs, and his fellow carriage drivers. He was an animal lover and always had cats and dogs as pets from childhood through the end of his life.
Phil was a history buff. He loved sharing Memphis history with the people whom he transported on carriage rides. He also traced his own family history as far back as the 1700s to the Todd family origins in Scotland and northern England.
Phil is described by those who knew and loved him as a “sweetheart,” caring soul, loyal, and all-around good person. He helped those in need and was loved by many people.
Phil is survived by his mother, Susan Todd; his sister, Beth Todd Bartholomew; brother-in-law, Joel Bartholomew; and his two nephews, Sam and Andy Bartholomew, all of Memphis, along with aunts, uncles, and cousins. His father, Jerry Todd, preceded him in death in 2003.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 12, in the chapel of Lindenwood Christian Church, 2400 Union Ave., Memphis, Tenn. Burial will be a private family service.
