Nancy was born in Glasgow, Kentucky to Charles and Lela Mae Payne. She grew up in Glasgow and graduated from Bowling Green Business University (now Western Kentucky University). There, she met Robert S. Summers and they wed on May 30, 1948 in Glasgow.
Nancy and Bob moved from Kentucky to West Virginia and then to Savannah, Georgia before settling in Miami, Florida.
She is the mother to Robert Payne Summers and Kay Summers McKean. She is the grandmother to Jennifer Arthur, Julie Summers, Joanna Brunell, Summer Sharobeem and Kent McKean. She is the great grandmother to Talah Arthur, Roger Brunell, Ethan Sharobeem, Eden Sharobeem, Cadence McKean, and Savannah McKean. To them , she was their ever-lovin’ Nana.
She always loved her pets. She had her poodles and her mutts but in 2000 she became a resident at John Knox Village, where she made lots of friends and raised lots of cats. Her cats are Simba, Tammy, Tippy, and Tillie. (Tillie is still available for adoption.)
Nancy’s late husband, Bob, was the Administrator of the Miami Heart Institute until his sudden death at age 55 in 1978. Nancy was a widow for forty years, but before his death she and Bob were very sociable and the family will always remember the New Year’s Eve chili parties each year as well as so many other fun events. They were both loved and appreciated by all who knew them.
Nancy taught Secretarial Sciences at Armstrong College in Savannah, and later at Baylor University in Miami. In the mid-‘80’s, she moved from Miami to Stuart, Florida where she worked as a real estate sales associate.
She was raised as a Southern Baptist and attended Palm City Presbyterian Church for many years.
She was active in P.E.O., a women’s educational organization. At John Knox Village she enjoyed her game nights with friends.
Nancy was known as caring, wise, and kind to all who knew her. Up to her last breath she was always thinking about other people and looking out for their needs. Her family is heartbroken to lose her, but she will live on in their hearts and minds, believing that she is now enjoying a happy reunion with her beloved husband.
