Margaret was born October 20, 1918, in Union City, Nebraska, to Jack and Minnie Chalfant. One of eight children, she grew up in Burlington, Colorado, where she graduated High School in 1936.
During World War II she joined the Navy, spending much of her service in San Diego. She always laughed when describing one of her jobs; transporting high-ranking officers in her motorcycle’s sidecar. She was honorably discharged in November, 1945. While stationed in California she met Doyle Ketcham and they were married in 1946. After living in Chicago a short time, they moved to Leavenworth, Kansas.
She lived in Leavenworth for 22 years where she was a homemaker. She and her family moved to Kansas City, Kansas, in 1982.
In retirement she lived in Boulder, Colorado from 1990-2007. She and her husband Doyle moved to Louisville in October, 2007.
She was an accomplished artist, creating numerous, beautiful paintings and exhibiting them in many venues. In 2011, her painting of a Cardinal bird was featured on the official Christmas card of the Masonic Homes Residences on Frankfort Ave.
She was preceded in death by Doyle, her husband of 62 years. She’s survived by her son Lewis Ketcham and daughter-in-law Barbara of Louisville; two step-grandchildren, Tara Guenthner of Louisville and Ryan Hipp of Wilmington, North Carolina and four step-great grandchildren.
All those who knew and loved her will miss her warm humor and the sparkle in her eye.
When asked what he thought of Margaret after meeting and visiting with her the first time, one young friend of family said, “She’s a pistol.”
